Angus de Lange

I remember very vividly the first time I saw Angus de Lange’s work. I was an impressionable boy of not more than 6 and in “my world” parallel universes and passing between “ours” and “theirs” was still real. I believed unequivocally that Angus’s painting, in his parents home on the shores of Lake Rotoiti, was one of the gateways. It was the way the light emanated from the work that fascinated me, drew me inwards, around a corner as if an intrepid adventurer to a splendid mystic beyond. Nearly a quarter of a century later, when I see light painted in such a way I regain my adventurous spirit. In my opinion, to successfully be able to paint an internal radiance is a rare quality, one in which Angus de Lange excels.

As you can see from this body of work Angus has not only continued to develop the above mentioned style of painting light but introduced many other features that stimulate and intrigue.

There is a certain honesty to de Lange’s more graphic work, the dynamic interplay between line and splodge have given rise to this new collection “Stuff and Other Things”.      (Cameron Drawbridge, August, 2008)

Artist Statement

This collection of paintings came to fruition between 24th May and 29th July 2008.

They are dedicated to Marjorie de Lange, a true patron, who has never ceased in her determination to unravel the complexities of seeing. She has come to stand before them on the South Coast of Wellington.

I offer her my love and gratitude.

Angus de Lange trained as an industrial designer at the Wellington Polytechnic School of Design during the sixties. John Drawbridge was one of his teachers. John's generosity, artistic integrity and humanity has been a lasting legacy. Thank you John.

After practicing and teaching design, de Lange in the late eighties found out from Ian Jarvis how a painting could be made. He has painted since then. This is his first showing in Wellington having exhibited elsewhere. He currently lives in Auckland.
