Katy Corner (Visually Tactile)

The phrase ‘can’t see the wood for the trees’ comes to mind when thinking of my own work. Only recently have I spotted the source of development from the first tapestries shown at South Coast Gallery last year and these newer ones. For the works in Mind’s Eye (2007) each canvas was first divided with light pencil lines in order to set a framework from which to balance. This provided considerable freedom for imagination, within boundaries, but the later pieces were straining for release.

In 2008’s Visually Tactile limits are still to be found, but any rigid starting point or grid has been collapsed. I begin either with a random form or enter the canvas from the lower right corner so that a progressively intricate balancing act takes place.

Choices come with colour, texture/pattern and shape. Experimentation involves chance, which is a very welcome ingredient, even though dilemmas inevitably occur. It is in grappling with these warring factions – coming to an understanding of them, rather than ‘winning’ the battle – that the greatest satisfaction lies. (December, 2008)
