GRANT TILLY               View Shafts – Unexpected Wellington                   31st May – 22nd June 2008

These mixed media works are based on drawings I did around Wellington twenty or thirty years ago. Wellington is a city I love. I can still unexpectedly come across views and vistas that surprise and delight me. An alternative title for this exhibition could well have been “Time Tunnels” as five or 6 buildings and vistas that once existed on the date shown, are gone or at least changed beyond recognition. Coming across some of them as they are shown in this exhibition would certainly be unexpected – if not downright miraculous.

All of the buildings depicted are (or were) real, however the placing of them as they are in these works is, in some instances, a little fanciful. The idea is that these selected view shafts may sharpen your focus on what visually makes Wellington the unique city it is.

The colours used on the buildings are colonial white and double colonial white.
